SEAHAWKS HIGHLIGHTS

THANKYOU SEAHAWKS! FOR A TERRIFIC SEASON ON NEWSTALK 710 KIRO.

The exodus continues from the Seattle Seahawks' coaching staff. The Seahawks lost another assistant coach Monday when Ray Rhodes was hired as the assistant defensive backs coach for the Houston Texans. Rhodes is the fifth assistant Seahawks coach to depart the staff since the end of the 2007 season. Head coach Holmgren fired offensive line coach Bill Laveroni, quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn was hired as the Washington Redskins' offensive coordinator and, wide receivers coach Nolan Cromwell and offensive assistant/quality control coach Gary Reynolds left to join the Texas A&M coaching staff, with Cromwell becoming the offensive coordinator in that program.

Holmgren has announced 2008 will be his final season as coach of the Seahawks. He is expected to be succeeded in Seattle by assistant head coach/defensive backs coach Jim Mora, former head coach of the Atlanta Hawks. Rhodes has been on Holmgren's staff for the past five seasons. He was the defensive coordinator for the Seahawks from 2003-05 and had the title of special projects/defense the past two seasons after having health problems. Rhodes spent five seasons as a head coach first in Philadelphia and then Green Bay. Rhodes worked with Texans head coach Gary Kubiak for one season in San Francisco and from 2001-02 with the Broncos. He was the NFL Coach of the Year in 1995 after leading the Eagles to a 10-6 record and a wild-card spot in the playoffs. He was the Redskins defensive coordinator in 2000. Rhodes is from Mexia, Texas, and played two seasons at Texas Christian before finishing his career at Tulsa and played seven NFL seasons. Listen to News Talk 710 KIRO's Dori Monson's interview with Coach Holmgren (1/22).

Court officials say Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon will enter a plea Feb. 5 on charges of driving under the influence. The charges stem from an arrest Dec. 28, when a Medina police officer saw Moon's vehicle on the Highway 520 Bridge at about 2:10 a.m. and noticed it had expired tabs. The officer arrested the former Seattle Seahawks quarterback on suspicion of DUI.

The Seattle Seahawks announced Thursday they have hired Mike Solari as their new offensive line coach, two days after head coach Mike Holmgren fired Bill Laveroni. Solari spent the past 11 seasons with Kansas City Chiefs, the first nine as offensive line coach and last two as offensive coordinator. The Seahawks may have been attracted by the fact that with Solari, the Chiefs finished among the top 10 teams in the NFL in rushing offense five times during the last seven seasons. They fired Solari on New Year's Day after Kansas City gained just 1,248 yards rushing this season, the team's worst total in a nonstrike year.

The Seattle Seahawks announced earlier this month that six players have undergone surgeries since the end of the season. They're starting running back Shaun Alexander (left wrist), defensive end Baraka Atkins (left wrist), tight end Will Herring (arthroscopic, right knee), running back Josh Scobey (left lower leg), offensive lineman Floyd Womack (right biceps) and offensive tackle Ray Willis (arthroscopic, left knee). The Seahawks say starting center Chris Spencer will undergo shoulder surgery and reconstructive thumb surgery Friday. In addition, it says shoulder surgeries will be performed next week on starting defensive end Patrick Kerney and starting offensive left tackle Walter Jones next week. And starting wide receiver Deion Branch will undergo knee surgery in the near future.

Seattle Seahawks assistant coach Jim Mora has withdrawn his name for consideration as the head coach of the Washington Redskins to replace the retired Joe Gibbs. Mora was one of five candidates to interview with Redskins owner Dan Snyder. Mora met with Snyder on Wednesday and Thursday, spending Wednesday night at a guesthouse on the owner's property. Mora played linebacker at University of Washington and returned to Seattle last year to become the Seahawks' defensive backs coach after he was fired as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. He went 27-23 in three seasons in Atlanta and would be considered a favorite to become the Seahawks head coach if Mike Holmgren decides to retire this offseason. The three other known candidates for the Washington job are Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Ron Meeks, Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz and Redskins assistant Gregg Williams. One other candidate, whose name has not been made public, has also been interviewed.

Now it's time for Seattle Seahawks president and general manager Tim Ruskell to earn his salary. Don't be fooled by the team's five consecutive playoff appearances and four division titles in a row. The Seahawks play in the NFC West, which is considered the weakest division in the NFL. Since winning the NFC in 2005, the team has gone 2-2 in the playoffs. Ruskell needs to get some help, and a lot of it, for Mike Holmgren for Holmgren's 10th ... and perhaps final ... season as the franchise's head coach in order for the Seahawks to get to the Super Bowl again. Embarrassed 42-20 in the snow in an NFC second-round playoff game at Green Bay Jan. 12th, the Seahawks need a lot of help, especially on offense. Holmgren admitted as much at his annual end-of-the-season news conference in Kirkland, saying: "Probably we will emphasize more in the offseason shoring up the offense.'' Headed into his fourth season as president and general manager of the Seahawks under owner Paul Allen, Ruskell must find some help for quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, who delivered a career high in touchdown passes (28) and passing yards (3,966) this season.

Holmgren says the Seahawks are going to hang onto fading running star Shaun Alexander, but Seattle finished 22nd in the NFL with 3.8 yards per carry during the regular season. Against the Packers, it had a season-low 28 yards on 18 carries. And Alexander will be 31 next August. Holmgren says: "That is a major offseason fix.''

Ruskell needs to get some help for the Seahawks' offensive line and at tight end, where 35-year-old Marcus Pollard started this season. Pollard and backup Will Heller combined to catch just 41 passes during the regular season. Starting right guard Chris Gray will turn 38 during the offseason.

Then there's the matter of Ruskell keeping his top free agents. The top priorities for contract negotiations are expected to be cornerback Marcus Trufant, kicker Josh Brown, wide receiver D.J. Hackett and right tackle Sean Locklear, in that order. All can become unrestricted free agents on March 1.

The Seahawks worked up a 14-0 lead against Green Bay, but in the end the snow and Brett Favre proved to be too much. The loss, played out on a snowy Lambeau Field in Green Bay, eliminates the Seahawks from the playoffs.

Favre threw three touchdown passes for the Packers, and Ryan Grant scored three times. The Seahawks finish the season with an 11-7 record. They had hoped to reverse what happened the last time they were in Green Bay for the playoffs. In January 2004, the teams went to overtime, but Al Harris intercepted a pass by Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and returned it for a 52-yard TD. Highlights.

The Seahawks are now 0-8 in postseason road games since their only win, in 1983 when they beat Dan Marino and Miami in the AFC playoffs. The losing streak includes a loss in the Super Bowl two years ago.

CHECK OUT 710 KIRO's JIM VALLEY'S PICS!  The "12th Man'' flag is atop the Seattle Space Needle. Washington resident Jim Whittaker, the first American to reach the top of Mt. Everest, raised the flag January 2nd. Check out Jim's pics with Jim Whittaker and Seahawks' CEO Tod Lieweke. The flag is displayed as long as the Seahawks remain alive in the postseason. The flag measures 25 feet by 35 feet.
